United Abominations You simply can not deny Dave Mustaine of having it: a clear-cut notion. He will never dissemble it and is a certain guarantee for controversial statements and/or allegations. He has won persons over with it, but it has also brought him quite some feuds, aversion and even some legal suits.
With the release of 'United Abominations' coming up, Dave was yet again good for some stiff statements. You want an example? "It ('United Abomination') is kind of a defibrillator for the metal community. Somebody's got to step up to the plate, play solo's again, and play heavy rhythms that are actually recorded live in the studio - because it ain't the same six seconds pasted 300 times. Somebody had to do it again." Are it just words or does Mustaine indeed know to take care of it music wise; boasting or truth?
A huge amount of fine solo's all in line with the songs, the o so recognisable, classic tinged intro, the unequivocal riffs, Dave's singing, the musical aggression, the lyrical virulence … at 'United Abominations' Megadeth brings that typical thrash/speed sound which made them one of the huge bands of this earth. Songs like 'Sleepwalker', 'United Abominations' and 'Gears Of War' instantly make you think of the early years of the band.
Together with bass player James LoMenzo (Black Label Society, White Lion), guitarist Glen Dover (King Diamond/Eidolon) and drummer Shawn Drover (Eidolon) Mustaine knows to present an album that can convince me from begin to the end. And that is something which, especially with his more recent albums, has been different. Lyrically Dave is kicking around and it may be clear that with titles as 'Washington Is Next!', 'United Abominations' and 'Amerikhastan' that Mustaine has more than enough to grouse at the turbulent world, governments and the United Nations.
Noteworthy is the presence of the song 'A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)'. Originally one could find this song at 'Youtanasia' (1994). The video clip and single of this song were banned by several broadcasters, among them MTV, as this song was seen as a pro-suicide song. By adjusting it a little, recording and releasing it again Dave, vocally assisted by Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil, wants to rehabilitate this song. And he passed with flying colours; which is something one may safely say that of the whole album.
'United Abominations' has become an album with the energy and experience of those classic thrash albums, without even sounding a bit stale even once. Great cd!
