The Cribs' Ryan Jarman has explained to Nme.com why the band chose to release a brand new single - 'Don't You Wanna Be Relevant' - this week (October 29).

The singer revealed that the band refused to hold back the song for their next album, to maximise commercial potential, as they thought it would be doing their fans a disservice.

"I started writing the song after (second album) 'The New Fellas'," he explained. "But when we came to record the last album, we didn't have a verse, so we left it. Then we were recording b-sides when the verse just popped into my head.

"Most people thought we should hold it back, but I don't agree with that. Also, I've always had a problem with bands re-releasing songs. It's a really lame thing to do, it's a bit of a sell out, so I didn't want us to do that. We don't release songs to promote an album, we release songs because we want to release songs."

Meanwhile, The Cribs have been announced as support acts for the forthcoming Sex Pistols gigs at London's Brixton Academy. The band will support the punk legends at the venue on November 8, 10, 12 and 14. All tickets have sold out.
