Lust Lust Lust The title of The Raveonettes album 'Chain Gang Of Love' sounds concerned with affairs of the heart. This name, 'Lust Lust Lust' sounds like it's more to do with affairs of the flesh. On the opening song 'Aly Walk With Me', Sharin Foo sounds frustrated, wanting to transfer her fantasies from mind to body, like alchemy..."Aly walk right out of my dreams, into my arms".
It's a regular, cool rock 'n' roll tune, then the guitars descend into incomprehensible feedback noise. The drum-beat continues exactly as before, oblivious like the Latin Americans who ignored the Spanish Armada, even though they'd never seen ships before. The strange guitars and regular drum-beat make 'Aly...' a light and shade classic.
Next, 'Hallucinations' is another regular, cool rock 'n' roll tune. There's a pause in it, and because of the wild feedback on 'Aly...', you might flinch, expecting the same. This makes the simple guitar-plucking that starts back up all the more devastating, leaving us wrong-footed and on our arses, like a Messi step-over.
'Dead Sound' is a classic of contrasts, with scuzzy guitars next to the beautiful twinkling of what sounds like a xylophone. The frantic drum-beat sits nicely with Sharin's resigned voice. Next, on 'Black Satin', Sharin's words, as well as voice sound resigned. Some of it's hard to understand, like you're trying to read lips under water, but Sharin definitely sings "The void is black, yeah I drown". This melancholy music would sit perfectly in a Sofia Coppola movie.
'You Want The Candy' flies the 'Lust Lust Lust' flag gloriously..."C'mon give me a dirty treat". The restless, jittery music is perfect for the randy lyrics. As a counter-point, 'With My Eyes Closed' covers the sour side of love... "I close my eyes to hurt you, to leave you". The music is fitting for the moping lyrics, with the drum-beat dragging it's feet behind the strummed guitar. 'Lust Lust Lust' can tug at the heart strings as well as the G-strings.
