We Swear By The Light Life The Maple State must have listened to all the reviews that compared last single Joanna (review link) to Morrissey, as next release We Swear By The Light sees these Manchester newcomers sounding nothing like the enigmatic ex-The Smiths front man.
A teaser as such for the impending mini-album (produced under the watchful eye of Tom Knotts from The Earlies), the band's new direction leans towards US indie rock and pop-punk.
It isn't the most original of songs, but in these cold, frosty months the upbeat tendencies are more than welcome, as a faux-american vocal skips above jangly guitars and faint electronics, like Tokyo Police Club jamming with I Was A Cub Scout.
So far The Maple State are making fun, "pleasant" music, but it is obvious their potential is not fully-realised just yet. The band need to get a few more singles out there while they define their own sound and then just wait and see, their debut album will be everyone's iPod playlist.
