James Blunt Live from Hammersmith Apollo, London, 14 January 2008. Some people seem to have a natural dislike for James Blunt and admittedly I am not a massive fan myself, but I must give this guy some proper credit. On the way there I was wondering whether I’d be bored after a while, but when I left the Hammersmith Apollo I was head over heels in love with Blunt, sobbing I should have said Hi to his mum who was sat right in front of me.
Alright, a bit exaggerated, but Blunt’s voice is amazing and you wonder whether they’ve altered a single tone on the record. He’s very gifted and so are the musicians he plays with. The songs sounded just the way they do on the records. Some people might not like that, but I prefer pure song versions to rocked-up, 'techno' live versions of e.g. Damien Rice.
Blunts gig was anything but boring. Apart from his great musical performance the light and screen work was fantastic, ranging from romantic over disco to psycho and giving each song its own flair. The screen showed uneasy waters mirroring the lucent figure of Blunt playing guitar, as well as his own footage of the Kosovo war when he sang 'No Bravery', or disco lights while he played a cover of 'Cupid's Chokehold', a happy song he apologized for all his sad songs with.
But he has no need to apologise. In all fairness he was outperformed by his lead guitarist and his songs might be a little similar, but he manages to make up for it with great piano playing, a thrilling voice and thoughtful lyrics. He’s not a great talker but he said that his first album included a song everybody played to their weddings, and his new record 'All the lost souls' has one they could play at their divorces. It’s called 'I’ll take everything'.
Blunt is a cute superstar who doesn’t hide how overwhelmed he is by a crowd that sings along to his songs. He can sometimes be childishly impulsive, like when he jumped onto the girls in the front row to kiss them unceasingly. The girls were a little stunned,.I bet they loved it though. The next morning I realised that I’m not actually in love him. Still, the gig was overwhelming and definitely worth a watch.
