Super Furry Animals

Live from Music Hall, Brooklyn, NY, 25 January 2008. Having traded in their shiny space suits and Yeti costumes for matching SFA logo jackets, the Super Furry Animals delivered in style for nearly two hours. Initially, the crowd seemed unfamiliar and slightly disinterested as the quirky Welshmen opened up with the first two tracks off their new record, "Hey Venus." The mood picked up soon though as they plowed through four nearly-consecutive classics, which included "She's Got Spies" from "Radiator" and a Teenage Fanclub version of "Northern Lights." By mid-set, their Beach Boysian harmonies were bouncing from every surface and the crowd's excitement was in full swing.

The remainder of evening delved into three separate versions of "Earth" -- which essentially a fuzzed-out non-song of second-long spacey interludes, during which scruffy frontman Gruff Rhys and beard-laden guitarist Huw Bunford insisted that the crowd gesture antlers with their fingers.

They also showcased almsot every track from the new record, last year's "Hey Venus." Amongst all the new material, SFA sprinkled generous gems and crowd-pleasers from their eleven-year-old back catalog. The night's selection, which was largely generated by fan requests from the band's blog, reached its first climax as Rhys destroyed a shiny silver guitar to close out "Receptacle for the Respectable." He then excused the band as they grabbed a quick drink and offered the crowd a chance to socialize and "trade email addresses."

Following a short intermission, the band returned to play "Slow Life" which the towering Rhys sang whilst wearing an oversized Power Ranger-esque helmet.

The only minor disappointment was that this performance lacked a visual aspect -- i.e., video backdrops and costumes -- for which they have become known. Instead of taking to the stage as showmen or entertainers, they came out as five dudes who played a tight, energetic rock show; at that, they seemed to please all around. In the end, they raised the bar by whaling out the expected closing track -- the anthemic "Man Don't Give a Fuck" -- and ending the set with "Keep the Cosmic Trigger Happy."
