The Black Keys: Attack And Release
Attack And Release
Fans of the Black Keys expecting another trip to a Mississippi juke joint with their latest release are instead headed to a Memphis R&B lounge. The ghost of the late Ike Turner infuses "Attack And Release," an album that's much different than anything the Keys have done in their previous raw and raucous releases. Spooky, sedate and moody, the record is the remains of a project guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney were working on with Turner and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton of Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz).

When the rock 'n' roll pioneer died last December, the project seemed dead as well. Instead, Auerbach and Carney made the album their own. It's intriguing at times, moving at others and answers the question everyone's always had about the Keys: What would they sound like with more than two members?

Danger Mouse's fingerprints are all over the place, from the funky chorus of ghosts on "I Got Mine" and "Strange Times" to the banjo on "Psychotic Girl" to the Jethro Tull flute and Sly and the Family Stone touches on "Same Old Thing."

Like most everything Danger Mouse touches, "Attack And Release" is better for his presence. The Keys have always burned down the house with their take on Mississippi Hill Country blues. Like the best producers, Danger Mouse left his beat-friendly comfort zone and met the Keys halfway, preserving their sound, but enhancing it as well.

There are so many delightful songs here, it's hard to pick one. Let's go with "Psychotic Girl," a song so unlike anything the Keys have done it's startling. Danger Mouse layers the song with banjo, organ, funky bass, a skip-along snare line and Auerbach's weathered voice — a melange of familiar sounds spun into a new flavor of cotton candy we've never tasted before.
