Derrick May Hi-Tek Soul goes from strength to strength at Ministry Of Sound on Saturday 19th April, as Chicago's Derrick Carter comes face-to-face with resident Derrick May; while Radio 1Xtra finally remembers that house & techno are black music and broadcasts live from the club.
Derrick Carter's known all over all over the world as the man with the 'boompty boomp', a phonetic attempt to describe his own distinctive underground house sound. He's had us all 'Squaredancing In A Roundhouse' at some point (to reference his infamous 2002 album), with his jackin' sound now synonymous with Chicago, Carter's home and musical base since he started making tunes in the late 80s.
Since then he's helmed Classic Records, which ceased to exist (as planned) after 100 releases. The plan was to create quality tracks then fade away, so that's just what Carter and his Classic partner, the UK's Luke Solomon did. Recently Carter rocked a rare UK set at the nearby Corsica Studios, but of course Ministry is at the other end of the scale in both size and prestige. The Corsica is one of London's best-kept-secret warehouse venues, but Ministry is one of its longest-running and most well-equipped clubs - expect a huge, rocking dance-floor, but also one of the best soundsytems in town. All the better to 'boomp' you with, as Derrick Carter might say.
Derrick May's exploits as a techno godfather have, of course, been discussed many times over, but seeing his Detroit techno skills blend alongside Carter's jackin' techy house will be a special treat. And over in the Bar is Detroit third-generation DJ Stacey Pullen, winding his way as the 'Kosmik Messanger' alongside Jim Masters, a clubland stalwart since his Ultimate Base days with Carl Cox in the mid-90s.
