Wonderland Fresh from hosting parties at London’s Ministry of Sound and announcing a new weekly night at the White’s Isle’s legendary Eden, the debut soundtrack from the globe trotting veteran’s spanking new brand Wonderland has landed. With heavyweights Groove Armada hosting Eden’s back room and a line up packed with the biggest names in house, breaks and techno, Pete Tong’s Wonderland is on track for an undoubtedly epic summer.
Across two CDs remaining ever faithful to its house roots, Wonderland’s debut album boasts a smattering of upfront cuts as Pete calls in favours only he can! The first instalment kicks into action with the slow building beats of Prydz’s ‘Europa’ followed seamlessly by a hard hit of deep house as Leftfield’s intense and unremitting ‘Not Forgotten’ wastes no time in driving the mix relentlessly forward. The dark and brooding grooves of Shonky Zero’s ‘Time Skylark’ provide a neat contrast to the electro house vibes of Skylark’s ‘Interlater’ and take us midway through Tong’s first instalment. Wink’s funkier ‘Stay Out all Night’ allows a short respite before Pete rocks us with a retouch of ‘Radio Slave’s ‘Grindhouse’ and the recent huge essential new tune ‘Sample Whore’ by Irish upstarts The Japanese Popstars before wrapping things up with Tong and Spoon’s hard hitting Gas Face.
How times have changed, Pete has just completed a successful 5 year residency at Ibiza superclub Pacha, produces great underground house alongside a number of upcoming artists and now earns respect and adulation from the world’s clubbers wherever he goes. But never one to sit on his laurels Pete has developed his own clubbing brand 'Wonderland’ and along with a new weekly residency in San Antonio’s Eden venue comes a 2cd mix compilation showcasing the sounds we can expect to hear throughout the summer. Oh, and there’s the small matter of presenting his essential selection show on BBC Radio 1 every Friday night which he has done for the past 17 years.
Moving away from the usual selection of big tracks that will be licensed to every chart bound mix compilation, Pete lays down a mix of dark and twisted electro tracks that showcase the sound he is really passionate about. Tracks from Eric Prydz, Josh Wink, Smith & Selway and Paul Woolford give you some idea of the diversity of this mix and these are joined by a couple of Tongy’s own productions and remixes 'Gas Face’ (with Dave Spoon) and his remix of Skylark’s 'Interlater’ (with Paul Rogers). There are a few classics here as well with 'Muzik Xpress’, 'The Man With the Red Face’ (both making an appearance in their updated form) and Leftfield’s 'Not Forgoten’ which forms part of a cracking opening salvo of loops and layers. The tune of the summer 'Pjanoo’ from Eric Prydz is possibly the only track with crossover potential as Pete keeps things dark and bleepy.
