Dwele: Sketches Of A Man
Sketches Of A Man
It’s soul time! That’s right, Detroit crooner Dwele is back in pole position with his latest offering, ‘Sketches Of A Man’. For those that know him, he’s back on point with an album that courageously gages itself between hip-hop instrumentation and vocal brilliance. For those that aren’t too familiar with the man on the mic, he’s the guy who gave vocal support to Kanye West on his infectious ‘Flashing Lights’. He’s been on the scene for a minute, and thanks to his overt experience is a man whose work can never be overlooked.

Inspired by his love of art, Dwele travels through this album as if it were a drawing with a multiple subject disorder. With every soul singer’s favourite topic being the female member of the species, it plays a hefty part in the makeup of this album. ‘I’m Cheatin’’, the clever first single, plays like an episode of ‘Desperate Housewives’… but with a twist. While Dwele enjoys strolls in the park and candlelit dinners with his girlfriend, it’s his freaky late night tales with another woman that keeps his attention locked down. But before you go accusing him of taking his lady for granted, the other woman is in fact his girlfriend but after she’s let her hair down. The beat is smooth, the vocals compliment the track, and the witty wordplay help define this track as a summer must have.

Other moments on the album that push for your attention with a touch of class include the Bobby Caldwell motivated ‘Open Your Eyes’, which was also used as a sample on the popular Common record ‘The Light’. Dwele takes on the challenge of covering it with his street corner chords and hits the nail right on the head. There’s also the geographical ‘Travellin’ Girl’. Musically depicting a world map, a lady companion is taken on a trip around the globe. Stops include Paris, Monaco, and London – where Dwele name checks Piccadilly Square, Camden, and indeed Camden’s number one hot spot, The Jazz Café. The mid-tempo slice of worldwide exposure is a dream to be in. Kicking back you can imagine each and every place that jumps from Dwele’s tongue. With very few features, one being longtime collaborators Slum Village, ‘Sketches Of A Man’ is a straight talking type of album with storyteller tendencies.
