Melodia Melodia, was recorded at the legendary Sunset Studios in LA with Rob Schnapf (who did their first two albums and Powderfinger's last). This fourth album comes after enigmatic front man, Craig Nicholls, has been diagnosed with Asbergers Syndrome and he made a successful live comeback in 2006/07 with killer shows at Splendour in the Grass, Homebake, Big Day Out, Reading and Leeds (UK) and their own sold out tours of Australia and the U.S. 14 tracks including 'He's A Rocker', 'Orange Amber' and 'Get Out'.
The Vines are a two-faced bunch of lads. The Aussie quartet like to rock out like grunge legends Nirvana, and sing sweet Beatles-inspired pop songs - but that's about it. The quartet have plugged away with these two distinct styles over three albums - the first of which saw them briefly hailed as the world's best band by rock rag NME. That form didn't last as wayward front man Craig Nicholls was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, limiting his ability to tour but still resulting in decent albums - including 2006's Vision Valley. But on Melodia - their fourth album - it feels like Nicholls and co are treading water.
Get Out, Manger, He's a Rocker and Braindead are classic grunge-era rock songs and moshpit igniters that you'll swear you've heard before. Probably because you have. On the trippy, psychedlic pop side, A.S III, Orange Amber and She Is Gone offer up wistful harmonies, piano-based melodies and plenty of "ooh-oohs" and "na-na-nahs". But by the end of it, you'll be screaming at The Vines to mix it up a bit. Which, thankfully, they do, on Merrygoround, a track that combines - you guessed it - grunge-era rock and '60s pop. Take a listen to Radiohead's Kid A guys, and see if you get any ideas about experimenting from that.
