Paul van Dyk at Pier 54, NY
Paul van Dyk
Live from Pier 54, New York, 16 August 2008. What a beautiful day for an outdoor event! Having attended many of Paul van Dyk's previous performances in Central Park I enjoyed the change of scenery at Pier 54 Hudson River Park. It felt much more out in the open, and even though it was long and slightly narrow there was still much space to accommodate all of the party-goers. Made Events did really well with organizing this event. The lines traveled much faster than usual due to having set up multiple entryways and a full team on staff to ensure everything ran smoothly. The event opened at 3pm for the early birds to come in and reserve their spaces on the dance floor. The music did not officially start until 5pm making it a straight 5 hour set from Paul van Dyk with more to come at the after party.

Paul spun a great energy infused trance set with some techy peaks. Some of the tracks that he played at the Pier were Lange feat. Sarah Howells - Out Of The Sky, Super8 & Tab - Helsinki Scorchin', Jonas Steur - Second Turn, Andain - Beautiful Things, Paul Van Dyk feat. Ashley Tomberlin - New York City (He played all 3 remixes), Underworld - Born Slippy and he mixed up some older tracks too such as Binary Finary - 1998. There were many tracks played that the crowd as well as myself were unfamiliar with. It is possible they are unreleased, but still great tunes nonetheless.

Paul interacted well with the crowd, and occasionally he would cut the sound in some vocal tracks that was playing so that we could sing along. You could tell he was having a great time. The sound was nice and clear and the EQ was set just right. Even with the banging bass there was no distortion regardless to where you were standing. I also left the place with no ringing in my ears, which was a plus. Occasionally the wind would carry some of the sound away from the party but this was no major issue. As the sun started to set the crowds were still pouring in and packing the place out. The sky was beautiful to look at in the background. The clouds were plump and fluffy and there were cascades in shades of blue, grey and purple.

On the sides of the stage Paul had some ambient lighting effects as well as two large flat panel displays. There were graphics and visuals being displayed on the displays and occasionally the displays would also feature some live crowd shot's as well as the full moon that was radiating brightly to the rear of the crowd. Even the empire state building looked like a multicolored photo light in the background. The surrounding buildings were all starting up their outdoor lighting as well which set the mood nicely for the lasers when they came on at approximately 8:30pm.

The show ended at 10pm and we went off to the after party. We made one quick stop to freshen up and quickly headed over to Webster Hall. We arrived during the opening set by none other than New York's own Jason Jollins. Jollins played a nice selection of groovy house and set the tone for Paul. I think that much of the crowd arrived straight from the Pier, because the place was jumping from the moment we got there. The service was phenomenal and the staff there was very attentive to ensure that we had a steady flow of drinks and our area was kept clean. We had a nice booth on the balcony that we shared with some friendly strangers who came from Tennessee to see Paul's performance. Webster Hall took care of us well and the icing on the cake was our waitress who was a super hottie.
