 Silk String Quartet Three CDs released in 2007 focus on virtuoso musicians from China. The Silk String Quartet, formed by four skilled performers is regarded by some as the finest Chinese string quartet ensemble based in Europe. The ensemble is formed by Cheng Yu on pipa (she is also the founder of the Quartet); Sun Zhuo on guzheng ; Hu Bin on erhu; and Zhou Jinyan on yangqin.
On their latest CD, Contemporary and Traditional Chinese Music, Silk String Quartet combines the old with the contemporary, including traditional pierces along with new compositions and arrangements. The wonderful recording features exquisite melodies, cinematic passages, a bit of experimentation and lively passages. |

 New York Guitar Festival 2008 Fresh off the heels of the enormously successful inaugural Adelaide Guitar Festival in Adelaide, Australia, which drew more than 30,000 attendees, organizers for the New York Guitar Festival (the original in a series of sister festivals, which also includes Wall to Wall Guitar Festival) announced its 7th season of concerts, January 12 - February 6, 2008.
With more than 25 performances by some 60 exceptional guitarists - whose styles vary from jazz and classical to rock/pop, traditional and avant-garde - the festival will explore the universal significance of the guitar. Audiences will be treated to concerts ranging from an all-day Guitar Marathon that focuses on the guitar’s history in Brazil to eclectic tributes to country music’s biggest legends. |

 Vicente Fern?ndez Mexican singer Vicente Fernández has had a great year in 2007. His new studio album Para Siempre (FOREVER) was released September 25, 2007. And in just eight weeks, the CD has gone Platinum, as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America.
This is in recognition of U.S. and Puerto Rico sales in excess of 200,000 units. The CD is also nominated for a 2008 Grammy in th category “Best Mexican/Mexican American Album”. In addition to receiving three Latin Grammys for previous recordings, Fernández also achieved the Latin Grammy's highest level of recognition in 2003 when he was named “Person of the Year.” |

 Gresha Schuilling Sri Lankan star, 24 year old Gresha Schuilling has just released her UK Christmas hit, 'Cold Cold Night' on YouTube. The BBC said that Gresha Schuilling is attempting Christmas Number One on the BBC Music website.
Gresha's Christmas hit was released by Media Eye Music in London. 'Cold Cold Night' was composed by the distinguished Sri Lanka born singer/songwriter Nimal Mendis and his son, Paul Marie Mendis. The Christmas song has had huge exposure around the world and independent radio stations have also played it on the internet. |

The album features an all-star lineup including the band Conjunto Todo Rumbero, under the direction of renowned drummer Orlando "Puntilla" Ríos, performing eight of Asencio's most famous rumba songs as well as a new piece inspired by his work and influenced by Asencio's influential oeuvre. A Tribute to Gonzalo Asencio pays homage to Asencio's unique story and contributions to the rumba tradition, which exemplifies the deep roots of Afro-Cuban music. |

 Bruce Molsky The Celtic Connections 2008 produces several changes in the festival program. American fiddle, banjo and guitar player Bruce Molsky has joined the bill for the Transatlantic Sessions concerts. Heidi Talbot has confirmed a top line-up for her concert in St. Andrew’s in the Square featuring John McCusker, Boo Hewerdine, Ewen Vernal and special guests.
The Celtic Connections Whisky Workshops in conjunction with Black Bottle – the official blend of the festival - will take place every Saturday of the festival at City Halls, from 4pm. |

 Joel Dorn Legendary record producer Joel Dorn, whose studio collaborations included classic albums with Roberta Flack, Max Roach, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Neville Brothers, died of a heart attack on Monday in New York. He was 65.
Beginning in the early 1960s, Dorn became a protegé of Atlantic Records president Nesuhi Ertegun after a long correspondence that had unfolded when Dorn was a teenager growing up in Philadelphia. |
