Whether he wins or loses on Grammy night, the chances of more Kanye West awards show drama were high after he received a leading eight nominations Thursday.

The British singer Amy Winehouse received six nominations after months of personal problems that took the focus off her gritty, soulful music. Other top nominees included the Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Paul McCartney, T-Pain and Timbaland.

At first, Amy Winehouse was heralded as a gifted new artist with an amazing albums. Now she's known for erratic behavior and alleged substance abuse — but Thursday's Grammy nominations should put the focus back on her music.

Though the singer-songwriter has endured a slew of personal setbacks in recent months, industry insiders expect her to be among the top nominees when the Recording Academy announces its contenders in Los Angeles.

"Amy Winehouse is incredible. I think she should have got a little more positive recognition," said singer-songwriter Ne-Yo.

'American Idol' alums win big

Justin Timberlake took home top honours at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles last night (November 18).

The pop star was named Favourite Male Pop-Rock Artist, and his album 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' took the prize for Favourite Soul/R&B Album.

Meanwhile Fergie earned the gong for Favourite Pop-Rock Female Artist, Jennifer Lopez took home Favourite Latin Artist, and Linkin Park was named Favourite Alternative Rock Band.

Hollywood's awards season unofficially gets under way Sunday night with the American Music Awards — and for the first time, members of the public were able to vote for their favorite artists online

Beyonce Knowles, Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park and "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry's band Daughtry had a leading three nominations apiece heading into the 35th annual AMAs, to be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and set to air on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

Akon, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Young Jeezy, T.I. and "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood had two nominations each.

The New York hip-hop band, who had a breakout hit this year with the song "Cupid's Chokehold," took home Woodie of the Year at the college-oriented network's fourth annual award ceremony honoring musicians, as selected by viewers.

Boston rock quartet Boys Like Girls garnered a wood statue for best emerging artist while hip-hop group Madvillain was selected as most original artist. Say Anything, Guster, Spoon, The Academy Is and Muse also got wood at the ceremony, held Thursday at the Roseland Ballroom.

Latin music's biggest stars, including Juan Luis Guerra, Ricky Martin and Calle 13, were vying for top music honors at the Latin Grammy awards Thursday

The show's Sin City debut was slated to feature a mixed bag of performances, from award nominees to Las Vegas Strip staples such as the Blue Man Group.

Guerra, who received the Latin Recording Academy's Person of the Year award Wednesday night, led the field with five nominations, including album of the year and merengue album for "La Llave De Mi Corazon."

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has been named musician of the year for 2008 by a classical music publication in which the honorees during the past half-century included Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky and Vladimir Horowitz.

Netrebko, 36, will grace the cover of the 2008 Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts, often referred to in the business as the "bible" of the industry, with its comprehensive data bases and contact listings.

Olga Guillot, the "Queen of the Bolero," says her lifetime achievement award from the Latin Grammys is recognition of a lifelong passion for music and performance.

"This award is a tribute to a 63-year artistic career," Guillot, 84, told The Associated Press in a recent interview at her home in Mexico City. "For an organization to recognize that is a great reason to feel beautiful and happy."

She is among the artists to receive the award, which was to be presented Wednesday, a day before the eighth annual Latin Grammy Awards show in Las Vegas.

The music world is getting a little bit country Wednesday night

The 41st Annual Country Music Association Awards will be broadcast live from the Sommet Center in Nashville at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. And who are the big nominees? George Strait, who had his 55th No. 1 single this year and was recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, is nominated for both entertainer and male vocalist of the year.

Strait and Brad Paisley lead with five nominations each. Strait was also nominated for musical event of the year, for a performance with Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson; album of the year for "It Just Comes Natural"; and single of the year for "Wrapped," his 55th career No. 1 single.
